Netflix Hidden Gems: Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist (2008)

I remember watching this movie when it first came out ten years ago, and I remember enjoying it. So, when I saw that it was on Netflix, I figured I’d give it another watch. And, honestly, that film is highly underrated.

Sure, the story, overall, isn’t the best. However, it’s the performances of Kat Dennings and Michael Cera that make the film so enjoyable. Michael Cera plays Nick, a heartbroken teenager who is still hung up on his ex, and Kat Dennings plays Nora, a girl who definitely has a thing for her “friend” Trisha’s ex-boyfriend, even though she’s never met the guy and knows him solely by the mixes he makes that Trisha just discards. They meet by chance at a concert (Nick’s bands concert, to be exact), where she has him pretend to be her boyfriend “for five minutes” to prove to Trisha that she’s not a total loser. This is made less creepy by the fact that Norah doesn’t actually know that that is THE Nick, Trisha’s Nick.

There are two driving plot points in the story. One is that they are on the search for where their favorite band is playing in New York City that night. The second is that Nick’s friends have lost Norah’s drunk friend, Caroline, in the city and they desperately need to find her.

Like I said, the plot is lacking in places. But, the charming performances from both Dennings and Cera make up for it. I particularly like Michael Cera in this role. He’s not the usual push over loser that he tended to play towards the beginning of his film career. His performance in Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist sort of reminds me his performance in Youth in Revolt. I don’t remember much about that film, but I do remember being impressed by Cera. He and Dennings have a wonderful chemistry, which helps to pull you in and make you really attached to these characters.

So, if you’re scrolling through Netflix looking for something to watch tonight, instead of re-watching The Office for the millionth time, give Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist a try. Let me know what you think!
