Avengers: Endgame (2019)

It feels like we began this journey eons ago. In 2008, they didn’t know if Iron Man would be a success. They were taking a shot in the dark. The film took this country and the world by storm and the MCU was born. An ambitious ten year plan was laid out; everybody involved hoping they would be able to pull this off. Now, in 2019, we have the conclusion to that ten year long journey we all started.

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely had a massive task in front of them: take all the stories that have been told up to this point and seamlessly put them together into one cohesive narrative. They did exactly that. They write a good chunk of the MCU films together, but it is still an impressive feat. Equally as impressive is the Russo Brothers being able to take all the different directing styles throughout these past ten years, and weave them together.

I do not want to spoil anything with this review. Going in knowing very little about what will happen is the best way to watch this film. I saw it opening night, and the energy in the theater was electric. People clapped and cheered throughout the film. You could feel the love that the audience has for these characters. You could feel how much they meant to everybody.

Nowadays, it seems rare for so much of society to come together like they have. There’s even been an internet campaign to “Not spoil the Endgame” for those that are unable to see it opening weekend and, so far, it has worked. That’s a beautiful thing.

Reflecting on this film and the past films, I’ve realized how much they have shaped me just as a person. That sounds funny to say, but it’s absolutely true. These films being as successful as they have been meant that it was okay to be a geek or a nerd. Loving comic books and loving these stories no longer had the same connotation that it had before. And for that I will be eternally grateful.

This chapter has come to a close in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And, as sad as that close makes me, I feel that it is the right ending. Now we can welcome bigger and better stories, while never forgetting where it all started:
