As we all know, I love atmospheric horror. And I love watching atmospheric horror films even more in theaters. Especially when surrounded by those who are also excited to see the film.

I remember seeing the trailer for David Bruckner’s The Night House ages ago in theaters. I remember not being able to tell where the film was going. All I knew is that I was intrigued. So, I jumped on the opportunity to see the film in theaters. And, I was not disappointed.

Starring Rebecca Hall, Sarah Goldberg, Vondie Curtis-Hall, and Evan Jonigkeit, The Night House tells the story of a woman, Beth (Rebecca Hall) who has just lost her husband to suicide. As she begins packing up his stuff, she finds out that she may not have known her husband as well as she thought she did. Written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski, we dive deep into Beth’s psyche to uncover some dark secrets.

I’m going to be honest with you: about a quarter of the way into the film, I figured out what was going on. It’s a plot that’s been done before, a number of times. However, director David Bruckner’s visual style and style of story telling kept me intrigued. As did Rebecca Hall’s performance. That woman gave this film her all and it pays off.

There’s a lot of fun camera tricks and twist and turns throughout the film that kept the audience tense. Overall, I think it was a very solid film, and definitely recommend it to anybody who likes films like The Witch, The Lighthouse, or It Follows.
