Did I go in expecting a thematic masterpiece of writing? No. Did I go in expecting the whole film to make sense? Also no. Did I go in solely anticipating watching a giant monkey fight a giant lizard and having it look cool? You bet your ass I did.
Honestly, Godzilla vs. Kong was such a good choice as my first new movie back in the theater. Seeing those fight sequences on a giant IMAX screen was well worth the money. As I stated above, I did not expect the writing to be great. There were plenty of plot holes. But, every time I was about to question something in the film, whether it was a question of how a character knew something or a question of the technology, a giant monkey and a giant lizard would start to fight and all would be forgotten.
Adam Wingard’s direction of the film wasn’t terrible, and all the acting performances were so-so. The person who clearly went the hardest for this film was composer Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL. His music worked well in this film. The color palette chosen for the film made it visually interesting and the entire Hollow Earth sequence was astonishing.
If you’re looking for a film to see in theaters, I highly recommend Godzilla vs. Kong. The film is fun, and we all need a little fun after this last year, don’t we?
